“Manufacturing Matters,” a summary of research from a variety of sources including the 2021 CTE Pathways study conducted by the Student Research Foundation, finds that manufacturing jobs can be an excellent career choice for today’s students.

A few decades ago, you might have found a typical high school student in the Charlotte area lying in a field on the family farm, thinking about owning it one day. If you happened upon a more academically ambitious youngster, she or he might have been thinking about going to Davidson or UNC, maybe planning to be a physician or a politician one day.
Today, you will still find youngsters like them, but you will find fewer of them. In their place, more and more young North Caroliners are thinking about becoming engineers, programmers, factory workers and general business people, for a very simple reason . . .
Only a few weeks ago, not too many people were thinking about supply chain management. Most of us were probably assuming that the supply chains that bring us medicines, medical equipment, food and other goods were working well. Read more
The short answer to that question is, a wide variety of them. Students who earn degrees in engineering can specialize in manufacturing and machine design. Computer science majors can become automation programmers. Students who earn Associates degrees in manufacturing technology can get jobs “on the line,” making sure that equipment is working well. And students with high school diplomas can take jobs in manufacturing too – everything from maintaining production equipment to monitoring the arrival of manufacturing supplies. Read more
Manufacturing Day, an initiative of the Manufacturing Institute, is the nation’s largest one-day celebration of manufacturing. This annual event, taking place on October 5, 2018, focuses on showing young people, parents and educators the modern dynamics and opportunities a career in manufacturing offers.
